January 10, 2024 – The National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (ANFAVEA) released the consolidated balance of the automobile industry in 2023. The report highlights that the production of automobiles and light commercial vehicles reached 2,204 thousand units, marking a growth of 1.3 % compared to 2022. This increase was limited by the 16% drop in exports and the 29% increase in imports. On the other hand, the production of trucks and buses recorded a significant drop of 37.5%, due to the higher costs of new emissions control technologies, implemented with stage P8 of Proconve, valid since January 2023.
Total Vehicle Production: When light and heavy vehicles are added, production totaled 2,325 thousand units, representing a slight decrease of 1.9% compared to the previous year.
Domestic Sales: Sales to the domestic market of light vehicles stood out with 2,180 thousand units, registering an increase of 11.2%. When adding trucks and buses, vehicle registrations totaled 2,309 thousand units, an increase of 9.7% compared to 2022. The daily average of registrations showed consistent growth throughout the year, closing December with 12.4 thousand units/day , the best result in the last four years.
Factors that Boosted Sales: The good sales performance in December was driven by rental companies that acquired 75 thousand units, exceeding last year’s average by 30 thousand units. Promotions of hybrid and electric models before the return of Import Tax also contributed to this growth.
Automobile Exports: The balance of exports revealed an unprecedented fact: Mexico became the main destination for Brazilian exports, representing 32% of the total, surpassing Argentina, which historically occupied this position. The Mexican market grew 24.4% in the year, and shipments to the country increased 51% compared to 2022. Uruguay was the only other market that recorded growth, with an increase of 5%. However, the declines in the markets of Argentina (-16%), Chile (-57%) and Colombia (-53%) resulted in a 16% decline in total exports, which totaled 403.9 thousand units.
Projections for 2024: ANFAVEA maintained the initial projections presented in December 2023. The expectation for 2024 is a growth of 6.1% in registrations (2,450 thousand units), 6.2% in production (2,470 thousand units), and 0.7% in exports (407 thousand units). The President of ANFAVEA, Márcio de Lima Leite, stated: “We have reason to believe in a positive year for the Brazilian automotive sector. In addition to the expected growth for the domestic market and production, we celebrate the publication of MP 1,205, which establishes the MOVER Program. This is a modern and intelligent industrial program, which guarantees predictability for the entire automotive chain and new companies, in addition to promoting new decarbonization technologies and encouraging investments in R&D and neo-industrialization.
